Did you know?

What is Mold?

Mold is simply a fungus.  There are good molds, like those used to make antibiotics, and bad molds which can be toxic and cause negative health effects. The main purpose of mold is to break down dead materials, like wood and fiber, which are used in building materials. In fact, mold can feed on any of the organic materials found in your home, your office and virtually any non-synthetic surface which has some moisture.  Mold growth can begin as soon as 24 hours after a water event has occurred.  Sometimes mold growth can be seen in the form of a discoloration or a stain on walls or ceilings or identified by a musty smell, however not all mold growth can be so easily detected.  As mold grows, it can cause structural damage and serious health issues.

The Dangers of Mold

When mold is present in large quantities, or colonies, it can become a health concern.  The health effects from molds can be divided into three basic groups: allergenic, pathogenic, and toxic.  Exposure to allergenic molds can cause symptoms such as wheezing or a runny nose while exposure to pathogenic molds can result in suppressed immune systems. The health effects caused by exposure to toxic molds can be more pronounced and longer term especially to those with compromised immune systems.
